Exhibition Text:
The meaning behind the art piece “You and I” is that one should not judge others just because they are different from yourself. Rather that we are all equals and we should relate to people by seeing how we are similar and by embracing our differences. This way we grow better as people and we learn to treat each other with mutual respect.
Planning
In the planning phase I had just planned on making a broken mirror body that is falling to ground with arms reaching out for help, all at a life sized scale, the issue was getting the upper body to "float" because it would not be attached to the rest of the body as most of the torso has fallen to ground into rubble. The next concept was to paint a face on a canvas and to have a curtain like aspect in front of the face were it is transparent but it has many "floating" mirror pieces, but the composition proved to be too difficult for me. Then I realized that I could create a the body coming out of the canvas which would give it even more power, considering that its all focused on the broken mirror head. The mirror glass gives the look of being futuristic since chrome is often related to the future, and what the viewer would see is themselves with in others which leads to the consideration that we are all equals and deserving of our respect.
Process
|
The process of making the art piece "You and I" was not complex, as it was more of a long and redundant but it is quite simple. It was very time consuming but it was effective at catching the viewers eye as it is bright and chrome, which seems to pop out in every background. The piece has asymmetrical balance and it seems like it is distorted and rotates counter clock wise. In the process of making the piece, the piece starts to stand out and blind you if you are in any lighted areas due to the fact that I was using a mirror as the main material for the piece.

Inspiration
My inspiration came from my geography class where I was learning about the intentions of building a new bucks arena in the Milwaukee area. There I learned about possible side effects which are already in effect from the construction. The most staggering effect was that the arena was created as a space that would bring people together (Integration), but rather that it has started to segregate people as I had ;learned first hand by the research conducted in that field trip. I learned that people with more money are leaving the area to have more space and privacy which leaves the less financially potent people would have their rents raised which also forces them out into apartments, and condos causing there to be a shift in the integration of the people in the downtown area, meaning that segregation is formed. This also tends to create discrimination between social and economic classes which further emphasizes segregation. I was inspired to create a piece that would counteract these effects because we are all the same and we deserve to treat each other with respect and kindness.

My artistic inspiration came from Robert Mickelsen who is a glass artist that likes to create his art works to fulfill his creative needs. He also creates art to embrace forms, and materials that are around us all in our daily lives. Mickelsen created his art works out of glass, and he tends to give them colors to show a higher level of contrast. I found his art works inspiring, in a way that both his and my art are both attempting to express the inner beauty of what we consider ordinary, simple and/or different from us. In artistic choice I used his simple yet effective idea of using every day materials to form something new and beautiful. In Mickelsen's case, he uses glass which is all around us, like in our cars, windows, doors, blenders, etc. and creates art, while in my case I used mirrors which are also found in cars, bathrooms, bedroom, etc. and I created a human face. My meaning does follow Mickelsens ideology of creating art to convey discovery of self worth and meaning.
Experimentation
The experimentation in this piece was simply doing something of this type of nature as I am accustomed to working with two dimensional work such as drawing, and the only real three dimensional work that have done was mainly with clay. Working with glass was really out of my comfort zone. I began with going to the art store and buying some materials and I just started working by just thinking about how I could create the piece with maximum effectiveness. I had just broken the mirror and half way into the actual piece I had realized that I had to many big chunks of broken mirror glass, and I had to break the pieces even smaller by hand, which was difficult because I had to avoid cracking the glass. But I also tried integrating some of the cracked glass because it created a smoother transition in the face and aesthetically it seemed as a greater artistic choice. I had also attempted having pieces that would stick out of the face to seem like layers but it looked like it was distracting to the meaning of the piece and I had to carefully cut the extra pieces off the face.
Reflection
I enjoyed the making the piece and I am very glad of how the center piece/focal point (the broken mirror glass face) turned out as it effectively conveys the meaning of not being judgemental towards others and being kind to one another. But it can also be appreciated aesthetically since it is eye catching, bright, life sized and chrome. I believe still that there are areas that can be improved such as in the choices done from the glass gluing process. I also believe that I could have chosen a better background color for the canvas to complement the focal point of the art piece "You and I", which would give the head even more attention as the focal point.
Compare & Contrast
My art piece "You and I" reflects the artistic style of Robert Mickelsen when I include a similar technique where I would use
Act Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
The artistic inspiration caused for me to have used mirrors and to create a human face to convey the idea of having respect and love for others.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author seems to have a reflective and understanding perspective on Robert Mickelsen's artworks.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The type of generalization that I had discovered was that people truly treat others the same way that they are treated and that we are alike mirrors, because if someone is happy we feel happy too, but if they feel anger, we feel anger.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea is that people react to art in the way that the artist makes his art work to be interacted with.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I had to infer the idea behind particular art works of Robert Mickelsen because he did not include a meaning behind all of his pieces as he is more of a person that believes that there is a different meaning to the piece for every person.
