Critique Feedback (2/22/17) (words: 309 ):
The artist inspiration is appropriate for the art piece being developed as the artist’s technique is the most relevant art style. David Foster and Chuck Close are appropriate for this art piece because it is a dot/stippling style artwork and both artist are known for this type of art style and it is the same exact thing I am trying to achieve. Then It is useful to use these two artist as artist inspirations since they both are valuable to me as they have the same form of style that I need for this mixed media piece which involves the process of stippling. Which the style of dot painting is useful since it's a nail stippling self portrait where Chuck Close is the self portrait style inspiration and David Foster is the stippling style inspiration. The qualities of these artist are that they both use precision to create realistic figures and/or forms in the art piece itself. I need this to base my own art work on because it acts as a general outline for my own art piece and it can be useful to see how well I did with the art piece, to sort of rate myself. This is useful because it allows me to provide myself with my own feedback, and it allows me to improve my own art piece based on what it's missing or what was done wrong. This is good for my reflection too because it also allows me to have something to say when I have to describe what I did wrong, and/or what I would change or improve about the art piece. It is also good to show where I drew my inspiration because it will provide the viewer with the background knowledge to allow them to make their own perspective and opinions based on my art work.
Exhibition Text
This piece is meant to reflect the beauty in simple objects that are merely overlooked on a daily basis just as a person is overlooked and forgotten. I express this through having nails be the art, that represents my face, to show that anyone and everyone is overlooked and/or forgotten once in a while.
Planning
I plan to have a wood board that will have nails with paint on the head to make a 3-d chuck close portrait. The piece will be a mixed media because it involves the process of drawing and the process of making a 3-dimensional piece. I will have to Photoshop a picture to place a grid to sketch it. Then I can transfer the lead back on to the board to begin putting the nails on the board to complete the piece.
Inspiration
My inspiration is David Foster a hammer and nail artist who has done works that illustrate a tiger, an elephant, a few portraits and an actual hammer hitting a nail. David Foster uses extreme precaution when placing each individual nail, as he is aware of the effects of having an outlying nail. It instantly breaks the flow of art piece. The use of individuality and collaboration as a single nail can break the movement of the art piece, while they can all collaborate and make the entire art piece work as a whole which is where the beauty of this art work really shines in. That is why this piece is influenced by David Foster.
Planning Sketches
Process
I will begin by making a grid on the board and I will first make a dot sketch of my face. Then I will place a nail on each dot as the sketch serves as an outline. Then I will make sure that each nail is straight on to the board, and I will start taking steps back to see if the image is the same, since nails are thicker than the stippling, I need to make sure that the art work does not distort. Then after doing this process I begin to check that all of the nails are at the same relative heights, to keep it leveled.
Experimentation
The experimentation will be in the Photoshop process, because I am relatively new to the Photoshop programs so placing the grid on my picture for the self-portrait was difficult. The experimentation was also on the cutting of the board because it was a compressed piece of cardboard and the blades that I was using were too weak. It was a challenge until I started stabbing the line in, rather than just cutting through it in one whole smooth motion.
Reflection
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork
My inspiration had directly affected my work as it gave me the exact idea of what type of work I should do which was the stippling a self portrait like Chuck Close, while using nails like David Foster.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration
The overall tone the author had was more of a supportive voice towards David Foster's work as if the author was promoting it.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The generalizations that I have obtained are that media and culture have a major impact on artist's and their works as they are the main focus of David Foster's subjects in his art.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea of my inspiration was that he wanted to show that art's beauty is found in its simplicity.
