Title: Peregrine Falcon
Exhibition
Planning
I planned on drawing a Peregrine Falcon because I wanted to represent "freedom". I specifically chose the Peregrine Falcon because its also the worlds fastest bird, which represents life, as in you have to go along with life or you will be left behind too. The fist drawing was of the Peregrine Falcon standing on a lone rock, and I will add a background for the aesthetics. I also planned on implementing Kathe Kollwitz usage of lines in this block print for the creation of the bird with in the wings and the body of the bird.
My artist inspiration is Kathe Kollwitz's self portrait because she draws in a great quality to create her images. I also was inspired by Kathe Kollwitz's self portrait as it is great in line usage, which I wanted to apply to my own work because it too would have an impact on how the wings would look like with negative space, as kathe would use in her wood prints. This is a value because it allows me to explore a new visual expression form that I have never used before, since I usually just use regular sketches. Kathe Kollwitz also helps me because she makes fine lines that look almost as if it was done by hatching, which would be a nice addition to my own piece which I am considering on using for the rock.
Process
|
1) Draw the image
2) Put lead on the other side of paper 3) Place paper above the linoleum block 4) Re-trace the drawing on the block 5) Begin carving the image 6) Erase all markings and smudges 7) Get the ink and pan 8) place the Linoleum block on the pan 9) Start treating the ink in preparation for the inking process 10) Apply the ink on the actual Linoleum Block 11) Place the paper carefully above the inked block 12) Begin pressing the paper on the linoleum block to transfer the ink 13) Remove the paper from the block 14) Let the print dry |
Experimentation/Reflection
My experimentation was in trying to get a perfect print, as I had four attempts because of the ink would not transfer correctly to the paper and it would look spotty and sloppy. I then had to apply more and more ink to the block, and then I had to place the paper on and press it, until all the ink transferred. This struggle was because I would not apply enough force and time on the ink transferring process of the block print, which caused me a lot more work. I also experimented on the usage of hatching in the rock to show depth, which did not particularly work so well.
Something I did well was how I left the background clear and how I carved most of the bird itself. I am happy with the quality of the lines, in areas such as the eyes, wings and chest, since they came out clear. I am a little disappointed with the right leg as it looks like it has a extra toe that is vertically inverted. I am also satisfied with negative space that I used in this art work since it gave it a better contrast than if it were a white background on a black outlined hollow bird.

Act Reflection
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
My inspiration had caused my project to turn into a line focused art work, since the whole concept was on the line usage, that Kathe Kollwitz used to create form.
What is the overall approach (POV) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall point of view/tone that the author used was informative since it was a bio for the artist Kathe Kollwitz, since the information came form a museum in her own name.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I had discovered that Kathe Kollwitz was expressing herself on many topics that included sexism, war, and equality, and Kathe also expressed how it affected her in many of her prints and coal sketches.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
An inference that I had to do during my research on kathe Kollwitz was how she actually made her wood prints and how I could apply her technique into my own art piece.
